Working arrangements: Full Time, Mix of Office and site visits
ACS is seeking an experienced Asbestos Technical Manager to lead technical standards across our asbestos surveying and inspection services.
This is a senior role for an experienced asbestos professional with a thorough understanding of ISO/IEC 17020 and UKAS requirements. You will help maintain UKAS accreditation, develop staff competence and ensure our surveying and inspection services are accurate, impartial and technically sound.
The role
Reporting to the Managing Director and working closely with the Quality Manager and Survey Manager, you will:
- Provide technical leadership across asbestos management surveys, refurbishment and demolition surveys and reinspections within our accredited scope.
- Maintain technical compliance with ISO/IEC 17020, UKAS RG 8, HSG264, the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and applicable technical guidance.
- Lead the technical implementation of changes to standards, guidance and accreditation requirements, including relevant transition arrangements.
- Maintain and improve technical procedures, inspection methods, survey strategies, report templates and supporting records.
- Work with the Quality Manager to maintain effective management systems, contribute to management reviews and support continual improvement.
- Establish competence requirements and oversee training, mentoring, site witnessing and formal authorisation of surveyors and other technical personnel.
- Oversee technical audits and quality assurance, including survey report reviews, site audits and internal quality checks.
- Ensure equipment and associated resources are suitable, with effective calibration, verification, maintenance and traceability arrangements where required.
- Ensure survey reports and inspection records are technically valid, traceable and appropriately reviewed and authorised.
- Investigate technical non-conformances, complaints and quality issues, assessing the impact on previous work and implementing effective corrective action.
- Act as a principal technical contact for UKAS, supporting assessments and ensuring technical findings are resolved.
- Provide technical input into contract reviews, complex surveying projects and the selection and monitoring of external technical providers.
- Safeguard impartiality, inspection independence and confidentiality, ensuring technical decisions remain free from commercial pressure.
- Provide clear, practical technical advice to colleagues and clients.
You will have defined authority to stop technically unsatisfactory work, restrict personnel authorisations and withhold reports where competence, safety, impartiality or technical validity is in doubt.
About you
You will bring:
- Proven technical management experience within the UKAS-accredited asbestos surveying sector.
- A detailed working understanding of ISO/IEC 17020 and its practical application.
- Relevant recognised qualifications in asbestos surveying, supported by demonstrable competence appropriate to the responsibilities held.
- Strong knowledge of asbestos management, refurbishment and demolition surveys and reinspections.
- Experience of UKAS assessments, technical auditing, staff competence assessment and management systems.
- Strong investigative skills, including root-cause analysis and assessing the impact and extent of technical failures.
- The ability to lead and develop technical staff while working collaboratively with departmental managers.
- Sound professional judgement and the confidence to uphold technical standards.
- Excellent communication, organisation and report-writing skills.
